On March 24, 2025, IOU Central Inc., also known as IOU Financial, notified consumers of a data security incident involving unauthorized access to sensitive personal information. According to the notices filed with state authorities, the breach exposed personally identifiable information (PII), including Social Security numbers and driver's license details.

IOU Central Inc. disclosed the breach to the Texas Attorney General's office on March 26, 2025, reporting that 791 Texas residents were affected. The disclosure to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office occurred on March 28, 2025, with 124 Massachusetts residents reportedly impacted. In total, at least 915 individuals across these two states have been confirmed as affected by this breach.

Currently, IOU Central Inc. has not publicly identified the exact method by which unauthorized parties gained access to consumer data or who was responsible for the breach. The incident remains under investigation.

IOU Central Inc.'s response

In response to the data breach, IOU Central Inc. has offered affected individuals complimentary Single Bureau Credit Monitoring services for a period of 24 months. These services, provided through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company specializing in fraud assistance and remediation, will alert users to any changes in their credit files, helping detect potential unauthorized activity.

Affected individuals have 90 days from the date of the notification letter to enroll in these monitoring services. Enrollment can be completed online by visiting Cyberscout's activation page and following the provided instructions. The enrollment requires an internet connection and a valid email account, and may not be available to minors under 18 years of age.

Additionally, IOU Central Inc. advises consumers to remain vigilant by regularly reviewing credit card statements and credit reports for any unauthorized activity. The company recommends obtaining a free copy of your credit report through AnnualCreditReport.com or by calling 1-877-322-8228.
