On August 22, 2024, AuthoraCare Collective became aware of technical issues affecting its network systems. Upon discovering these issues, the organization immediately took steps to secure its network and began a thorough investigation.
Cybersecurity and privacy experts, along with external IT forensic specialists, were engaged to investigate the incident in addition to law enforcement.
The investigation revealed that an unauthorized individual gained access to AuthoraCare Collective's systems between August 18, 2024, and August 22, 2024. Following a comprehensive review of the compromised data, the organization confirmed on October 21, 2024, that protected health information had been accessed or acquired by the unauthorized actor.
The data breach affected a total of 58,019 individuals across the United States, including four residents in Massachusetts.
The types of consumer information exposed varied by individual but included first and last names, medical diagnosis, prescription information, social Security numbers, and demographic information.
AuthoraCare Collective disclosed the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on November 19, 2024, and subsequently reported the incident to the South Carolina and Massachusetts Attorney General's office on March 13, 2025.
In response to the breach, AuthoraCare Collective has implemented additional security measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. The organization promptly notified law enforcement authorities and reported the incident to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights.
To support individuals whose Social Security numbers were compromised, AuthoraCare Collective is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services through Cyber Scout, a TransUnion company. Individuals potentially impacted by the breach who have not yet received notification are encouraged to contact AuthoraCare Collective's dedicated assistance line through TransUnion at 1-833-844-9300, available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm EST, to confirm eligibility and receive a credit monitoring code.
Additionally, AuthoraCare Collective recommends that affected individuals remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud by regularly reviewing credit reports and account statements for suspicious activity. Individuals are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus. Free credit reports can be requested at AnnualCreditReport.com or by calling 1-877-322-8228.
Consumers may also choose to place a fraud alert or credit freeze on their credit reports by contacting any of the three major credit reporting bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, or Equifax. Further guidance on protecting personal information and addressing identity theft is available from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
