
If you purchased or leased a 2015-2018 Nissan Murano or a 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), you may be eligible to submit a claim for reimbursement of up to $5,000 or a $1,500 voucher from a class action settlement.
Nissan North America, Inc. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit by providing various benefits to affected vehicle owners. The lawsuit alleges that certain Nissan Murano and Maxima vehicles from certain model years have defective CVT transmissions.
According to the lawsuit, these defects may result in poor transmission performance or even complete failure.
Who can file a class action settlement claim?
Class members must meet the following criteria:
- You purchased or leased a qualifying vehicle equipped with a CVT transmission before April 4, 2025.
- 2015-2018 Nissan Murano (non-hybrid models only)
- 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima (non-hybrid models only)
- Your vehicle was purchased or leased in the United States or its territories, including Puerto Rico.
How much is the Nissan settlement payout?
Eligible class members have multiple benefit options:
- Warranty Extension: Nissan will extend the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the transmission assembly (including the valve body and torque converter) and the Automatic Transmission Control Unit (ATCU) to 84 months or 84,000 miles, whichever occurs first, measured from the vehicle's original start date and mileage.
- Reimbursement for Prior Repairs: Claimants who paid out-of-pocket for CVT or ATCU repairs or replacements after the original warranty expired but within the extended warranty period (84 months/84,000 miles) are eligible for payments. Multiple repairs are eligible for reimbursement, provided each meets the criteria.
- Repairs completed at a Nissan dealership will be reimbursed the full amount paid.
- Repairs performed at non-Nissan facilities will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $5,000 per repair.
- $1,500 Voucher: If you have experienced two or more CVT or ATCU replacements or repairs during their ownership (excluding software updates or reprogramming) qualify for a $1,500 voucher. The voucher can be applied toward the purchase or lease of a new Nissan or Infiniti vehicle at authorized dealerships. Vouchers must be used within nine months of the settlement's effective date and is non-transferable.
- Class members must select either reimbursement or the voucher— you cannot receive both.
How to claim a class action rebate
To claim a repair payment or a voucher, you must submit a claim form by July 3, 2025, or within 30 days of the qualifying repair, whichever date is later.
Class members can file a claim online or can download a claim form to print out and mail to the settlement administrator.

Is proof required to submit a claim?
Yes, supporting documentation showing completed repairs and proof of payment, along with vehicle information is required:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Proof of payment for the repair or replacement
- Amount paid for the repair or replacement
- Vehicle mileage at the time of repair or replacement
- Date of repair or replacement
- If repairs were recommended by a Nissan dealer, documentation of the original diagnosis and recommendation must be submitted
Payment options
Approved claimants will receive a reimbursement check mailed to the address provided on the claim form.
Nissan CVT defect class action settlement fund
The settlement fund is comprised of:
- Settlement notice and administration costs: To be determined
- Attorneys' fees and expenses: Up to $3,450,000
- Service awards to class representatives: $5,000 each, a total of $20,000
- Payments to class members: Amount determined by the number of valid claims filed

When is the Nissan CVT settlement payout date?
The court will hold a fairness hearing on July 18, 2025. Payments to approved claimants will be issued after the judge grants final approval, and any appeals are filed.
