About Bayhealth Medical Center
Bayhealth Medical Center is a not-for-profit healthcare system that serves central and southern Delaware. It operates two main hospitals: Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus in Dover, and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus in Milford.
Additionally, Bayhealth manages an emergency center in Smyrna and several outpatient facilities throughout the region. It providing a range of services, including emergency care, trauma care, cancer treatment, cardiovascular services, and women's health with over 3,700 employees and a medical staff of more than 400 physicians.
What Happened?
On July 31, 2024, Bayhealth Medical Center discovered suspicious activity within its network. An investigation revealed that unauthorized access occurred between July 27 and July 31, 2024, during which sensitive information was acquired.
The types of consumer information exposed include:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
By August 7, 2024, the ransomeware group, RHYSIDA, had taken credit for the attack by posting a 7-day ransom notice on the dark web. It is unclear whether or not Bayhealth paid the ransom.
By October 1, 2024, Bayhealth confirmed that Protected Health Information was involved.
Bayhealth began notifying affected individuals on October 4, 2024, and continued to inform 257 Maine residents and 894 Massachusetts residents on February 3, 2025.
