On January 29, 2025, Hand & Plastic Surgery Centre, PLC (H&P), a medical practice based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, experienced a significant data breach. The incident involved an unauthorized third party attempting to infiltrate H&P's computer network. Upon discovering the breach, H&P swiftly secured their network and initiated a comprehensive investigation with the assistance of independent IT security and forensic experts.

The investigation revealed that certain individuals' personal info like social security numbers and protected health information may have been exposed during the attack.

The breach affected at least one individual in Massachusetts, as reported to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office. The full extent of the breach across other states is not specified.

Hand & Plastic Surgery Centre, PLC's Response

In response to the data breach, H&P has taken several measures to mitigate potential harm to affected individuals. The company is mailing notification letters to those potentially impacted, providing details about the incident and offering resources to help protect their information. H&P is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company specializing in fraud assistance and remediation services. Affected individuals are encouraged to enroll in these services and follow the recommendations provided in the notification letter.

To further protect against fraud and identity theft, H&P advises individuals to monitor their financial account statements and review their credit reports. If any suspicious activity is detected, it should be reported immediately to the relevant financial institution or company. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to report any fraudulent activity or suspected identity theft to law enforcement authorities, including the police and their state's attorney general. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides valuable tips on fraud alerts, security freezes, and steps to avoid identity theft, available at identitytheft.gov.
