On March 8, 2025, Yale New Haven Health (YNHHS) identified unusual activity affecting its Information Technology (IT) systems. Upon discovering this issue, the healthcare provider immediately took steps to contain the incident and launched an investigation, engaging external cybersecurity experts to assist. Authorities were promptly notified as well.
The investigation revealed that an unauthorized third party gained access to the YNHHS network and obtained copies of certain patient data on the same day, March 8, 2025.
The compromised data included personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, dates of birth, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, and demographic details like race or ethnicity.
Protected health information (PHI) such as patient type and medical record numbers was accessed. However, electronic medical records, detailed treatment information, and financial account or payment information were not involved or accessed.
Beginning on April 14, 2025, YNHHS will mail notification letters directly to patients whose information was involved in the breach. Although there is currently no evidence that the compromised patient information has been misused for identity theft or fraud, YNHHS is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services to individuals whose Social Security numbers were compromised.
Patients are advised to carefully review any statements they receive from healthcare providers and immediately report inaccuracies or suspicious activity. For additional assistance or questions about the incident, YNHHS has set up a dedicated, toll-free call center at 1-855-549-2678, available Monday through Friday, 9 am to 9 pm Eastern Time, excluding major U.S. holidays.
