Unity National Bank Data Breach Exposes Customers' Social Security Numbers

On July 2, 2024, Unity National Bank of Houston discovered suspicious activity within an employee's email account, prompting an immediate investigation. With assistance from third-party forensic specialists, the bank determined that unauthorized individuals had gained access to certain employee email accounts between July 2 and July 3, 2024.

The investigation revealed that the compromised email accounts contained sensitive personal information belonging to some customers. The exposed personally identifiable information (PII) includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account information, and passport numbers. Additionally, protected health information (PHI), likely from employees' records, such as health insurance details and medical information, was also potentially compromised.

According to a disclosure filed with the Texas Attorney General, 9,574 Texans have been impacted.. However, Unity National Bank of Houston has confirmed that it completed its comprehensive review of the incident on March 10, 2025, identifying all impacted customers.

Unity National Bank of Houston's response

Beginning April 8, 2025, Unity National Bank of Houston mailed notification letters to all potentially affected customers whose addresses are on file. These letters will provide detailed information about the incident and guidance on protective measures customers can take.

For customers who believe they may have been impacted but have not received a notification letter, Unity National Bank of Houston has established a dedicated phone line at 1-833-998-774, available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm ET, excluding holidays.

The bank encourages all potentially affected individuals to remain vigilant by regularly reviewing their account statements and monitoring their credit reports for suspicious activity. Unity National Bank of Houston has provided detailed guidance on steps individuals can take to protect their information, including placing fraud alerts and credit freezes.
