On February 3, 2025, True Dental Care For Kids and Adults LLC ("True Dental"), a dental practice located at 255 Brunswick Street, Suite 5 in Jersey City, New Jersey, discovered unauthorized access to its computer systems. An unknown individual or entity successfully breached True Dental's network, deploying a virus that encrypted the practice's data. According to True Dental, the intruder accessed and viewed sensitive patient information during the attack.

The breach affected approximately 17,640 individuals across the United States, compromising personally identifiable information (PII) such as patient names, dates of birth, home addresses, and phone numbers. Additionally, protected health information (PHI) in the form of patient dental medical records was also exposed.

True Dental has stated that it did not pay any ransom or funds to the unauthorized party. Instead, the dental practice immediately engaged a forensic cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach, restore the affected computer systems, and enhance security measures to prevent future incidents.

As of now, True Dental reports that it has not received any indication or evidence of misuse of the exposed data. Nonetheless, the exposure of both PII and PHI presents potential risks to affected individuals, including identity theft, fraud, or unauthorized access to personal medical information.

True Dental Care For Kids and Adults' response

Upon discovering the breach, True Dental quickly took action by hiring a forensic cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident thoroughly. The firm assisted in restoring the compromised computer systems and implementing additional security measures to protect patient data from further unauthorized access.

True Dental has also strengthened its web server infrastructure by adding new safeguards designed to enhance overall data security. The practice is actively working to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

If you are a patient who may have been affected by this breach, it is recommended that you closely monitor your personal and financial accounts for any suspicious activity.
