On May 15, 2024, RBN Insurance Services discovered a significant data breach involving unauthorized access to an employee email account. This breach, which affected 10,205 individuals across the United States, exposed a wide range of sensitive consumer information.

The breach was first detected when unusual activity was noticed within the email account. A forensic investigation revealed that unauthorized access had occurred as early as February 24, 2024. The investigation concluded that the unauthorized activity ceased after the breach was discovered and the account was secured.

The compromised information includes:

  • Full names
  • Addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Payment card information
  • Bank account information
  • Medical information
  • Life insurance information
  • Health insurance information
  • Social Security numbers

The breach was officially reported to the Maine Attorney General's Office on November 14, 2024.

In response to the breach, RBN Insurance Services took action to secure the compromised email account and engaged a specialized third-party cybersecurity firm to conduct a thorough investigation. The company has implemented several security enhancements to prevent future incidents, including resetting all organizational passwords, disabling web access to email, updating DMARC records, and verifying the use of multi-factor authentication across systems.

Additionally, RBN is offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services to those affected.

If you believe your information may have been compromised in this breach, it's important to take proactive steps to protect yourself. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Enroll in Credit Monitoring: Take advantage of the free credit monitoring services offered by RBN Insurance Services. This will help you keep track of any unusual activity on your credit report.
  2. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
  3. Place a Fraud Alert: Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file with one of the major credit reporting agencies. This will notify potential creditors to verify your identity before extending credit.
  4. Consider a Credit Freeze: A credit freeze can prevent new creditors from accessing your credit report, making it more difficult for identity thieves to open accounts in your name.
  5. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on any communications from RBN Insurance Services for updates and further instructions.
