Jani-King International recently experienced a data breach impacting individuals connected to its franchise operations. The incident occurred between November 26, 2024, and December 21, 2024, when an unauthorized third party gained access to certain segments of Jani-King’s internal network. During this period, the attacker was able to access and copy files containing sensitive personal information.
The breach was discovered on December 21, 2024. Jani-King began working with external forensic consultants to investigate and contain the incident. After a thorough review, which concluded on March 17, 2025, it was determined that the compromised files included personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, addresses, and Social Security numbers.
The impact of the breach is widespread, affecting at least 3,646 individuals in Texas, 175 in Massachusetts, and 9 in New Hampshire, as reported to state authorities. The total number of affected individuals could be higher, as notifications are ongoing. The breach was officially disclosed to the Texas Attorney General's office, the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, the California Attorney General's office, and the New Hampshire Attorney General's office in mid-April 2025.
The breach is considered severe due to the sensitive nature of the information accessed and the length of time the unauthorized party had access to Jani-King’s systems.
Jani-King has notified federal law enforcement and relevant state authorities about the incident. The company began mailing notification letters to affected individuals on April 16, 2025. As part of its response, Jani-King is offering complimentary credit monitoring services through Equifax for an extended period (details are provided in the consumer notice).
