On August 30, 2024, Gallagher Bassett Services, Inc., a leading provider of risk and claims management services, disclosed a data security event affecting the personal information of individuals associated with Total Safety Consulting (TSC), a company recently acquired by Gallagher Bassett.

The incident was reported to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, with at least one resident of Massachusetts confirmed to be impacted.

The incident included sensitive consumer data, including social security numbers, financial account details, driver's license information, and credit/debit card numbers. Although the exact method of data theft has not been disclosed due to Massachusetts law restrictions, the breach's severity is underscored by the nature of the information compromised.

Gallagher Bassett's Response

In response to the breach, Gallagher Bassett has taken several steps to address the situation and protect affected individuals. They engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident and have implemented additional technical security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Moreover, Gallagher Bassett is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through IDX, a ZeroFox Company, for 24 months. Affected individuals are encouraged to enroll in these services by November 30, 2024, to benefit from the protection offered.

Steps to Take if You Are Affected

If you suspect that your information was compromised in this data breach, there are several proactive steps you can take to protect yourself:

  1. Enroll in Credit Monitoring: Take advantage of the complimentary credit monitoring services offered by Gallagher Bassett through IDX. This will help you detect any suspicious activity on your credit report.
  2. Review Financial Statements: Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions. Report any suspicious activity to your financial institution immediately.
  3. Request Your Free Credit Report: Under U.S. law, you are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. Visit Annual Credit Report to obtain your reports and review them for any discrepancies.
  4. Place a Fraud Alert or Credit Freeze: Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file to warn creditors of potential identity theft. Alternatively, you can place a credit freeze to prevent new credit accounts from being opened in your name without your consent.
