On or about September 12, 2024, East Adams Rural Health (EARH) discovered suspicious activity within its network. Upon learning of this anomalous activity, EARH immediately contained the affected systems and launched a comprehensive investigation, engaging third-party cybersecurity experts to help determine the scope and impact of the incident.

The investigation revealed that certain systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized party. While the total number of individuals affected has not yet been disclosed, the compromised information may include a wide range of sensitive data: names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (PII), as well as medical information and health insurance information (PHI).

The investigation into precisely what information was impacted is ongoing. However, the exposed data could be highly sensitive, as it combines both personal identifiers and protected health details.

East Adams Rural Health's response

For those who may be affected, EARH has set up a dedicated toll-free response line at 866-651-4242, available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time (excluding major U.S. holidays). Individuals are encouraged to call if they have questions or wish to determine if they were impacted.

Given the types of information exposed, EARH recommends that patients and employees remain vigilant by regularly reviewing financial account statements for any suspicious activity. It is also important to check explanation of benefits statements from health insurance providers and promptly investigate any unfamiliar items. Taking these steps can help detect and mitigate potential misuse of your information.
