CFCU Data Breach Affects 1,839 Texans: Full Details

In a recent cybersecurity incident, Communication Federal Credit Union (CFCU) experienced a data breach that has potentially affected a significant number of its members. This breach, which occurred between December 31, 2023, and January 11, 2024, was discovered when suspicious activity was identified on January 11, 2024. An unauthorized third party gained access to a portion of CFCU's computer network, compromising sensitive member information.

The breach affected 1,839 individuals in Texas alone, with the total number of affected individuals likely higher across other states. The exposed data includes a range of sensitive personal information:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Social Security Number
  • Driver’s License number
  • Government-issued ID number (e.g., passport, state ID card)
  • Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Date of Birth

In response to the breach, Communication Federal Credit Union took immediate steps to secure their network systems and launched an investigation. They engaged third-party experts to assist in addressing the situation and to further secure their systems. Additionally, CFCU has offered affected individuals a complimentary two-year membership to Experian’s IdentityWorks, which provides credit monitoring services to help detect potential misuse of personal information. The credit union has also established a toll-free call center to support affected members and answer any questions they may have.
