Medical Center Barbour Data Breach

On October 29, 2023, Medical Center Barbour (MCB) detected suspicious activity within its network environment, indicating a potential data breach. Upon discovery, MCB swiftly secured its network and enlisted a specialized cybersecurity firm to investigate the nature and scope of the incident.

The investigation concluded on December 8, 2023, revealing that an unauthorized actor had accessed certain files and data stored within the network.

Further analysis by a reputable data mining vendor identified on July 31, 2024, that sensitive data belonging to individuals was included in the impacted files. The breach potentially exposed information such as dates of birth, medical information, and health insurance details. While the exact number of individuals affected has not been disclosed, the breach underscores the critical nature of the information compromised.

In response to the breach, Medical Center Barbour took immediate action to secure its network and engaged a leading forensic investigation firm to assist in the investigation and confirm the security of their systems. They have deployed additional monitoring tools and are committed to enhancing their security measures.

Furthermore, MCB is offering affected individuals access to credit monitoring services at no charge. These services include Single Bureau Credit Monitoring, a Single Bureau Credit Report, and Single Bureau Credit Score services for 24 months from the date of enrollment. MCB has partnered with Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, to provide proactive fraud assistance and remediation services.

Steps for Affected Individuals

If you believe you have been affected by this data breach, it is crucial to remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly review your account statements and credit reports for any suspicious or unauthorized activity.
  2. Enroll in Credit Monitoring: Take advantage of the free credit monitoring services offered by MCB. You can enroll by visiting and using the unique code provided in your notification letter. Ensure you enroll within 90 days from the date of the letter.
  3. Place a Fraud Alert: Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file by contacting one of the major credit bureaus. This will make it more difficult for identity thieves to open accounts in your name.
  4. Consider a Security Freeze: A security freeze prevents credit, loans, and services from being approved in your name without your consent. You can request a security freeze from each of the major credit reporting agencies.
  5. File a Police Report: If you experience identity theft, file a report with local law enforcement to document the incident.
  6. Stay Informed: Keep up to date with any communications from Medical Center Barbour regarding this incident for further instructions or updates.
