On October 19, 2024, Maxxis International, the global tire manufacturer, detected unusual activity within its computer systems. According to a notice filed with the Vermont Attorney General’s office, an unauthorized third party gained access to the company’s network between October 17 and October 19, 2024. The breach was initiated after an employee inadvertently clicked on a malicious link, allowing the attacker to compromise certain internal systems.
The ransomware group known as BLACK SUIT has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating on a dark web site that they accessed organizational data with a post about the breach on the Tor network (dark web).
The company has not disclosed the total number of individuals affected or the types of information exposed. However, the risk of identity theft or fraud cannot be ruled out due to the nature of the attack and the involvement of a ransomware group.
For those potentially affected, Maxxis is offering complimentary access to Experian IdentityWorks for 24 months. This service includes credit monitoring, identity restoration support, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance. Individuals are encouraged to enroll by July 31, 2025, to take advantage of these resources. Additionally, the company recommends placing a fraud alert or security freeze on credit files and regularly reviewing credit reports for any signs of suspicious activity.
If you believe your information may have been compromised, you can contact Experian’s customer care team at 833-918-1153 for assistance and identity restoration services. Further details about the steps you can take to protect your identity are outlined in the notice to consumers, which is available in PDF format at the bottom of this page.
