Why did this lawsuit result in a settlement?
The class action, known as Norman v. Trans Union, LLC, claims that Trans Union failed to reasonably investigate consumer disputes about hard inquiries appearing on their credit reports. Specifically, the plaintiff, Duane Norman Sr., alleged that after disputing a hard inquiry he believed was unauthorized, Trans Union neither contacted the company responsible for the inquiry nor removed it from his credit report. Instead, Trans Union sent Mr. Norman and other affected consumers a standardized "502 Letter." Trans Union denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid costly litigation costs and the possibility of a trial.
