Why is there a class action settlement?
The class action lawsuits alleged Colgate-Palmolive Co. and Tom’s of Maine Inc. engaged in deceptive and misleading business practices in the manufacturing, marketing and sale of Tom’s toothpaste products. In May 2024, the Food and Drug Administration identified concerns about conditions at Tom’s manufacturing facility in Sanford, Maine, noting noncompliance with certain manufacturing processes yet a review of finished products found no safety risk to consumers.
The companies deny the allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the expense and risk of continued litigation and a possible trial.
