About Oral Roberts University

Oral Roberts University (ORU) is a private evangelical Christian university located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Founded in 1963 by Charismatic Christian evangelist Oral Roberts, the university offers a wide range of academic programs, including over 150 undergraduate majors, minors, and pre-professional programs, as well as more than 25 graduate and doctoral programs.

What Happened?

In February 2025, Oral Roberts University disclosed a data breach that compromised PII including Social Security numbers. The breach was reported to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office on February 19, 2025.

The disclosure follows a post on the Dark Web by the ransomware group, RHYSIDA, on January 24, 2025. The group threatened to publish the hacked information publically if its ransom demands were not met.

An investigation by Claim Depot was unable to determine whether the ransom was paid or if the information was published publicly.

Your Rights and Next Steps

If you believe your information was compromised in this breach, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself:

  1. Enroll in Experian IdentityWorks: ORU is offering a complimentary two-year membership to Experian IdentityWorks, which provides identity protection support and helps detect potential misuse of your personal information.
  2. Monitor Your Credit: Regularly review your credit reports for any unauthorized activity. You can obtain a free credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting agencies.
  3. Place Fraud Alerts or Security Freezes: Consider placing a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit file to prevent new accounts from being opened in your name.
  4. Report Identity Theft: If you suspect identity theft, contact the Federal Trade Commission and your local law enforcement to file a report.
  5. Join a Lawsuit: Law firms are investigating ORU and want to speak with those who have been affected.
